WELCOME TO THE PERRY COUNTY GREENWAY

The Perry County Greenway Initiative grew from a dream to provide safe walking and cycling pathways in our county that would encourage our citizens to improve their health
through exercise and enjoy our beautiful area. Businesses and
employees want to locate in communities that have safe and healthy
environments in which to live. What better way to help our current and
future citizens than by creating a big city amenity in the midst of small
town life in the scenic rolling hills of southern Indiana? From this
inspiration grew a master plan to create cycling/walking trails throughout
the small towns and along the Ohio River to connect to the rugged
Hoosier National Forest (HNF) trails in order to give our citizens more
opportunities to enjoy the beauty of our area while improving their health.

The Greenway Initiative began in 2004 through the Indiana Association
of United Ways “4Community” grant program. In Perry County, local partners teamed up to look at the needs of the county and decided to focus on the development of a greenway to improve our community’s health, to enhance our economic development, and to bring an amenity to our community that would appeal to young families. The United Way of Perry County was the lead agency in this Initiative and continues to be the fiscal agent for the organization. The first step was to have a greenway expert, Dr. Anne Lusk from the Harvard School of Public Health, assess our county. View her report.

Tell City, the county seat, is located where the rolling hills meet the mighty Ohio River and the Hoosier National Forest protects miles of hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails through the scenic woodlands. Our first trail, the handicapped accessible Windy Creek Trail, was dedicated in October 2008 and is located in Hagedorn Park in Tell City. Other walkways in the planning stages are the Tell City RiverWalk trail, the William Tell Elementary Trail, the William Tell Elementary to 19th Street Sidewalk, and the Tell City Bike Lane project. Citizen committees in Cannelton and the Perry Central School area are currently working on plans for walkways in their areas.

We invite you come join us in our charming small towns surrounded by picturesque countryside, tranquil lakes, lazy creeks, forested foothills, along a scenic river byway to Perry County.
